◤Premier League◢ Darwin Núñez double fires Liverpool to 4-straight wins in all competitions with a 3-1 defeat of Southampton..

Liverpool celebrated their fourth straight win in all competitions with a 3-1 home win over Southampton at Anfield on Saturday in matchday 16 of the 2022/22 Premier League season.  

 

 

 

Shortly after the first half commenced, Firmino scored with a header to give Liverpool a flying start. However, Southampton then quickly fought back and taught the opponents with their own medicine through Adams’ header. However, Liverpool fought back again soon. Núñez scored through a clever shot to help the Reds regain their lead. Near the end of the first half, he slid the ball into the net again. In the second half, Southampton were on fire, but no matter how frantic they tried to attack, Alisson could always help the home team get out of danger. In the end, Liverpool defeated Southampton 3-1, ending the half season before the start of the World Cup with a victory. With this victory, Liverpool temporarily rose to sixth place in the table with 22 points; Southampton meanwhile temporarily dropped to the 19th place in the relegation zone with 12 points.  

 

First Half  

 

In the 6th minute, Liverpool got a free kick. Andy Robertson took the kick from outside the penalty area and crossed it into the penalty area, Roberto Firmino quickly followed up with a header from the right side of the penalty area, the ball flew straight into the lower left corner of the net past the helpless Gavin Bazunu, Liverpool broke the deadlock early to get off to a fantastic start with a 1-0 lead! Firmino took advantage of the situation with a goal to vent his disappointment of not being in the Brazilian national team’s 26-man squad for the Qatar World Cup!  

 

3 minutes later, it was Southampton’s turn to get a free kick. James Ward-Prowse took the free kick from outside the penalty area and crossed it into the penalty area. Che Adams quickly followed up, jumped up and headed from a very close distance in the middle of the penalty area past the outrushing Alisson Becker into the net. Southampton quickly equalized to level the scores at 1-1! Ward-Prowse also took advantage by delivering a pinpoint cross from a set-piece situation to express his disapponment for not being selected for the England national team’s Qatar World Cup 26-man squad!  

 

In the 16th minute, Darwin Núñez crossed into the box from the left, Mohamed Salah quickly followed up and strucked the ball from the right side of the penalty with his right foot against the outrushing Bazunu, however the shot was saved by the latter who fell to the ground and parried it away.  

 

5 minutes later, Harvey Elliott made an overhead through pass from the front, and Núñez quickly followed up and made a half-volley with his left foot unmarked at a close range in front of the left side of the goal in the penalty area, the ball flew into the bottom right corner of the net, Liverpool leads Southampton again with 2-1!  

 

In the 30th minute, Núñez made a horizontal pass from the right side of the penalty area, Firmino quickly followed up and strucked the ball with his right foot in the middle of the penalty area against the outrushing Bazunu, but the shot was caught by the latter. Soon after, Liverpool came again. Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed into the box from the right. Núñez quickly followed up, rose high in the middle of the penalty area and attempted a header, but his effort was parried away by Bazunu at the bottom right corner.  

 

In the 40th minute, Mohamed Elyounoussi crossed into the box from the right, Adam Armstrong quickly followed up, jumped high in the middle with a header,  however his shot missed past the left post.  

 

2 minutes later, Robertson made a low cross from the left and passed into the penalty area, Darwin Núñez quickly plugged in and slid the ball into bottom left corner of the net with his right foot to double his lead. Liverpool extended their lead to 3 -1! Núñez his ninth goal of the season!  

 

At the end of the first half, Liverpool led Southampton 3-1 and entered half-time.  

 

Second Half  

 

Both teams changed sides as the game continued. In the 50th minute, Liverpool got a corner kick. Robertson took the corner kick and crossed it into the penalty area, Firmino jumped high in the middle of the penalty area with a header, but the ball flew high out of the pitch. 5 minutes later,Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed into the box from the right, Salah quickly followed up, jumped high in the middle of the penalty area with a header, however the ball flew hight out of the pitch.  

 

In the 62nd minute, Romain Perraud made through pass from the front, Elyounoussi successfully beaten the offside trap followed up, got the ball, took a few steps and strucked with his left side from a difficult angle on the left side of the penalty area against the outrushing Alisson, but his shot was parried away by the latter at the bottom left corner who fell to the ground. Soon after, Southampton came again. Samuel Edozie and Che Adams played a one-two in the front, Edozie successfully beaten the offside trap, followed up and strucked with his right foot upon receiving the latter’s return pass in the middle of the penalty area, but his shot was pushed away by Alisson who had to make a flying save.  

 

In the 72nd minute, Liverpool got a corner kick. Robertson took the corner kick and crossed it into the penalty area. Virgil van Dijk jumped high in the middle with a header, however the attempt was slightly missed off the left post. 5 minutes later, Ainsley Maitland-Niles crossed into the box from the edge of the byline on the right, Adams quickly followed up and attempted a header from the middle of the penalty area, however the effort was bravely blocked off by Alisson‘s outstrechted legs who had to fall to the ground.  

 

In the 82nd minute, Liverpool got a corner kick. Robertson took the corner kick and crossed it into the penalty area, Fabinho jumped high in the middle of the penalty area with a header, however the ball flew high out of the pitch. 6 minutes later, Liverpool got another corner kick opportunity. Kostas Tsimikas took the corner kick and crossed it into the penalty area, Van Dijk jumped high in the middle of the penalty area with a header, but his effort was just slightly off the right post.  

 

As the final whistle is blown, Liverpool beat Southampton 3-1, and the Saints’ new head coach Nathan Jones sadly had to start his reign with a loss.
